Background of the Study

Social isolation is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of mental health, particularly among elderly populations. In Lagos State, rapid urbanization and migration have fragmented traditional family structures, leaving many older adults isolated. Social isolation among the elderly is linked to increased risks of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline (Adebayo, 2023; Chukwu, 2024). Urban environments, while densely populated, often lack the social cohesion and community support systems that protect against loneliness. In Lagos, factors such as urban migration, the breakdown of extended family networks, and a fast-paced lifestyle contribute to an environment where older adults may feel neglected and isolated. This isolation is compounded by the stigma associated with aging and mental health, which discourages older individuals from seeking social or professional support. As a result, many elderly residents experience deteriorating mental health, with significant impacts on their quality of life and overall well-being. Understanding the extent to which social isolation affects mental health among the elderly in Lagos State is crucial for developing effective interventions that promote social connectedness and improve mental health outcomes. This study will examine the relationship between social isolation and mental health conditions among older adults, providing insights that can guide policy and community-based initiatives.

Statement of the Problem

Despite being situated in one of Nigeria’s most vibrant urban centers, many elderly people in Lagos State suffer from social isolation, which has a profound negative impact on their mental health. Isolation often leads to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety, yet there is limited data on the specific mental health consequences of isolation among this population. Furthermore, social isolation is exacerbated by the breakdown of traditional support networks due to urban migration and modernization. The inadequate availability of community support services and mental health resources in urban areas means that isolated elderly individuals often do not receive the help they need. Consequently, these conditions contribute to a decline in overall health and well-being, with potential increases in healthcare utilization and associated costs. Addressing social isolation requires targeted, culturally sensitive interventions; however, the lack of robust data on its impact on mental health in Lagos hampers the development of effective strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of social isolation among elderly individuals in Lagos State.

2. To examine the association between social isolation and mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety.

3. To propose interventions aimed at reducing social isolation and improving mental health among the elderly.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of social isolation among elderly residents in Lagos State?

2. How does social isolation relate to levels of depression and anxiety in this population?

3. What community-based interventions can effectively mitigate the effects of social isolation on mental health?

Research Hypotheses

1. Higher levels of social isolation are significantly associated with increased symptoms of depression among the elderly.

2. Social isolation is positively correlated with higher anxiety levels in elderly populations.

3. Community-based social engagement programs will significantly reduce mental health problems among isolated elderly individuals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on elderly residents (aged 60 and above) in urban areas of Lagos State. Data will be collected through surveys, validated mental health screening instruments, and in-depth interviews. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and the difficulty of quantifying social isolation.

Definitions of Terms

• Depression: A mental disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest.
